How Hotter Summers Are Changing the Way Americans Get Dressed

Summers across the United States have always been hot, but Climate Central reports that average summer temperatures have risen across 97% of the 243 U.S. cities it analyzed since 1970. More recently, NOAA recorded July 2026 as the warmest month across the Lower 48 since record-keeping began in 1895.

So getting dressed has become harder to get right, especially when people are trying to stay comfortable through hotter stretches of weather without giving up the clothes they normally wear. 

Cornell fiber scientist Larissa Marie Shepherd told The Washington Post that dressing for summer heat is more complicated than simply wearing less, since uncovered skin absorbs more heat from the sun and burns more easily. 

And the same focus on comfort is showing up across apparel, where Felina has examined how construction affects comfort in clothing worn close to the body. So with hotter days harder to ignore, people are looking more closely at what their clothes are actually made of.

The Fabric Choices That Matter More When Temperatures Rise

Fashion has always been and will always be about self-expression, but during the relentless heat of summer, it also comes down to function and comfort. As temperatures climb, the fabric touching the skin becomes much harder to ignore, and even small irritations can make a hot afternoon feel much longer. 

Guowen Song, who directs Iowa State University's Lab for Heat and Thermal Protection Research, told TIME that "we human beings really need to balance heat and moisture to feel good." His observation helps explain why linen and cotton remain common warm-weather choices, even though neither performs the same way for every person or every climate.

Song also told TIME that engineered textiles can move moisture away from the skin and dry quickly, making some synthetic blends another practical option for hotter conditions. Still, higher humidity or more activity can make these differences easier to notice, especially as fabrics respond differently to air and sweat.

Breathability vs. Moisture Management

Among the comfort-related properties of fabrics, how the material handles moisture from the skin ranks near the top. 

Breathability describes how easily air and water vapor pass through the small openings in a fabric, and research published in the journal Materials points to fabric structure, especially porosity, as a major influence on that movement. 

Moisture management begins once sweat reaches the fabric as liquid, where wetting and wicking affect how quickly it spreads and moves away from the skin. 

The two processes do not always perform equally well in the same material, since a fabric that lets vapor escape easily may still struggle to move liquid sweat efficiently. 

Glen Kenny, a physiology professor at the University of Ottawa, told The New York Times that “there’s a misguided belief that wicking away that sweat from the skin is somehow going to keep the body cool.” His warning helps explain why airy fabrics and fast-drying fabrics can feel very different during the same hot day.

The Rise of Lightweight Layering and More Flexible Wardrobes

Layering is usually associated with colder weather, but summer heat has given the same idea a different purpose. Rather than adding warmth, lightweight pieces give people more control over what they wear as the day changes. 

Stylist Heather Newberger told The Washington Post that lighter summer fabrics bring back some of the flexibility people rely on during colder seasons, and this is especially true when clothing needs to be adjusted throughout the day. 

Thin cardigans and lightweight overshirts fit naturally into that approach, since either can be added or removed without rebuilding an entire outfit. And having that option makes a flexible wardrobe easier to rely on during daily routines that move through different settings.

The Air-Conditioning Paradox

There is nothing wrong with wanting to wear less in the summer heat, but indoor air conditioning can make that choice harder to rely on for a full day. 

USA Today reports that 78 degrees is commonly recommended as a summer thermostat setting, yet a 2021 Consumer Reports survey found that many Americans set their thermostats closer to 73 degrees during the day and night

So summer dressing now has to account for two very different temperatures within the same workday. And experts who study indoor comfort account for that tension by looking at both room temperature and the clothing people wear

Activity is also part of how they judge comfort, making clothing directly relevant to how a person feels inside a cooled space. So, with clothing affecting comfort across both settings, the question of what to wear before leaving home becomes harder to separate from how the day will feel.

Comfort Is Becoming a Bigger Part of Fashion Decisions

Comfort has always influenced what people wear, but hotter weather has made it harder to overlook. One sign of this comes from McKinsey’s State of Fashion 2026 report, which says consumers are placing more value on well-being in their daily lives. And clothing has become part of that conversation, especially as people look for pieces that still feel good several hours after getting dressed. 

Experts on hot-weather dressing point to looser fits as more comfortable, helping explain the move toward relaxed silhouettes and clothing that feels less restrictive. The same desire for more ease extends to underlayers, including bras, where breathable designs and a less confining fit become harder to ignore.

Hotter Summers Are Changing Seasonal Fashion Cycles

The beauty of fashion is that it is always changing, and much of that change has traditionally followed seasons on the calendar. But hotter summers are making those dates harder for retailers to rely on. 

Industry analysis notes that autumn collections can arrive while shoppers are still experiencing summer temperatures, leaving heavier clothing waiting for demand that has not arrived yet. 

But a sudden drop in temperature can create the opposite problem, bringing demand forward before stores are ready. And with shoppers buying earlier or later than retailers expected, stores have to rethink launch dates and how much transitional clothing they keep available. 

The same uncertainty is also making a more seasonless wardrobe feel practical, since clothes that work across several months are easier to keep wearing as temperatures change. And as more people dress this way, apparel companies have to plan for clothing that stays useful when the weather does not follow the retail calendar.

Conclusion: What Climate Adaptation Could Mean for the Future of Apparel

There's no way around it; summers are getting hotter and lasting longer, but recent decades also show that clothes can evolve to meet warmer conditions. One place that progress is already visible is in research on clothing for extreme heat, where lighter, more breathable construction has been shown to help reduce skin and core temperatures. 

And those results give designers a practical place to start, with textile development offering new ways to make everyday clothing more comfortable through longer periods of heat. 

Similar thinking is already appearing in intimates, where breathable fabrics and flexible construction are being used to make clothing worn close to the body feel less restrictive. But clothing alone cannot protect someone from extreme heat, and CDC guidance still emphasizes staying hydrated and spending time somewhere cool when temperatures become dangerous

Even so, clothing will still be part of how people respond to hotter summers, with more people choosing what to wear based on how hot the day will actually feel rather than what season the calendar says it is.
